Porcelain veneers

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers, also referred to as dental porcelain laminates or dental veneers, are custom-made, thin shells constructed of tooth-colored materials made to cover the front of the tooth’s surface. With these shells, it is possible to alter the shape, color, length, or size of the tooth.

What Type of Problems Can Be Corrected with Dental Veneers?

Veneers can usually be used to correct the following:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Uneven, misaligned, or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Teeth with gaps
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Tooth loss
  • Jaw problems
  • Abnormal wear to tooth enamel
  • Problems with speech and/or chewing

The type of orthodontic treatment recommended by your dentist will depend on available options and your preference. Traditional braces work by applying pressure to realign the teeth. Such braces are usually comprised of small brackets that are cemented onto the teeth. A wire is used to connect the brackets. From time to time, your orthodontist or dentist will tighten the wire to shift your jaw and teeth gradually into the proper place. In some cases, braces may be placed behind the teeth. Other options for orthodontics treatments include removable aligners.

What’s a Dental Veneer Procedure Like?

Getting a dental veneer typically involves three trips to the dentist. The first visit involves a consultation, while the second involves making the veneers, which will be applied during the third visit.

  • Diagnosis and treatment planning — During the consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth to ensure a dental veneer solution is appropriate for your situation. X-rays and impressions may also be taken during this visit.
  • Preparation — In order for your tooth to be prepared for a veneer, it will first be necessary for your dentist to remove some enamel from the surface of the tooth. Next, a model or impression will be made of the tooth; then, a dental laboratory will construct your veneer. This process typically takes between one and two weeks.
  • Bonding — Prior to the veneer being permanently adhered to your tooth, it will first be put into position temporarily to check the color and fit. As necessary, the veneer will be trimmed to achieve the perfect fit. The color of the veneer can also be adjusted. Finally, a special cement will be used to place the veneer permanently on your tooth. You may be asked to return for a follow-up visit to ensure your gums are responding properly to the veneer and check the placement of the veneer.
